BENEFICIAL DEVELOPMENT OF THE THEOSOPHICAL PROPERTY AT OREWA

A group of members of the Society, during the 2004 Concention at Orewa propose investigation of the full utilization prospects of the property owned by the Theosophical Society at Orewa which would have inestimable benefits for the T.S. and for society as a whole. During a brainstorm the following points were noted.

We have there already -

• A Theosophical community
• A Hall seating 60 people, the meeting place of the 3rd largest branch of the Theosophical Society in
New Zealand.
• The Orewa Branch Library.
• 16 Residential units (housing 18 people in 7 bed-sit units, 6 1-bedroom units, 2 2-bedroom units and 1 2-bedroom-and-sunporch house), plus 2 more recently acquired houses (details not known).
• Substantial grounds in grass and gardens maintained by the residents.
• A small Liberal Catholic Church.
• A large area of unbuilt-on land bordering the Nukumea Stream.
• An orchard.
• An old bam which could be used for housing kayaks and other gear.

Adjacent and nearby amenities -

• Orewa Beach, one of the most beautiful beaches in the world, with safe swimming, wind-surfing, kite surfing etc - 3 minutes walk away.
• Eaves Bush bush reserve - 5 minutes walk away.
• Natural Health Clinics - next door at Orewa House.
• Art and Craft Gallery - at Orewa House.
• Cafe - at Walnut Cottage in the grounds of Orewa House.
• Orewa Shopping Centre - 15 minute walk.
• Kayaking around the coast.
• Waiwera Hot Pools - 10 minute drive.
• Three coastal Regional Parks within a 10 to 20 minute drive, with several others just a little farther, including a marine reserve inviting underwater viewing by snorkel.
• Auckland city - 25 minute drive.

The possibilites -

Create a mini Adyar, a multi-purpose Theosophical Centre, including -
• A purpose-built Headquarters incorporating adequate and completely suitable office, library and archives space.
• A Conference centre - for Theosophical gatherings. Wisdom School sessions, and at other times rented to other groups. There is a dearth of conference facilities in the area so it would be much in demand.
• A Retreat Centre - chalet-style buildings for individual and group retreats. Could also be used by those from out of the area receiving treatment at the natural health clinics at Orewa House.
• A Spiritual Centre - a meditation area available to all, promoting and extending the spirit of Theosophy.
• Camping space.
• Organic vegetable garden.
• An ideal place for extending hospitality to overseas T.S. visitors.
• A very desirable Centre for New Zealand Theosophists.
• An easily reachable oasis for stressed-out citydwellers from Auckland.
• A worthy demonstration of Theosophy in practice.
