Devaraja appears several hundred feet above the mountain top and draws my attention
to the "ladder" or "steps" of intercommunion from and between
the Devaraja within the crater - the very active Hephaestus-like being-the mountain
Deva itself, and also a still greater Mahadeva presiding over the whole area
of Tongariro.
