"Greensleeves"
Traditional Melody
This traditional melody was popular in the days of Henry VIII. Shakespeare made reference to "Greensleeves" twice in his play The Merry Wives of Windsor (Act II, Sc. I and Act V Sc. 5). It is difficult to trace its original form, but in the version here performed the tune is distinctly modal in character - in fact in the Dorian Mode (utilizing a scale from D to D on the white notes of the piano).
